Dirty Water, Heat, Congestion Driving UK Tourists Away from Cyprus

September 23, 2024

NICOSIA – Cyprus could see losses in its biggest tourism market – the former Colonial ruler United Kingdom – with visitors from there disenchanted with the growing masses, overdevelopment, heat, and complaints about unclear beaches.

Despite an impressive return rate of 30 percent, many are canceling trips to the Greek-Cypriot side of the divided island that’s a member of the European Union, not the northern third occupied by Turkish-Cypriots since 1974 invasions.

One tourist complained to The Cyprus Mail about the assertive sales techniques found in Ayia Napa: “Everywhere … there are reps. They get in your face, touch your body…” said The Daily Record.

“Ayia Napa was disgusting. Drunk Brits everywhere, even on the beach. The music was so loud we couldn’t sleep. And everyone was selling something. I don’t really want to come back,” said another.

There were also complaints about beaches being overwhelmed. “The beaches are overcrowded,” said a Welsh tourist and a German family said, “The beach showers were broken,” and an elderly Slovenian couple said, “The water was dirty.”

Mancunian Harry, 28, told the British paper The Mirror it was too hot to even go to the beach. “I paid for a beach holiday, so that’s what I did. But I’m beginning to think I should have just spent all my time in my room,” he told Birmingham Live.

Another tourist said, “The differences are becoming more pronounced with each trip. When I first visited, Cyprus was still a gem. Over the years, it’s become the Costa Del Sol, overcrowded and over-commercialised.”

Speaking to the Express, Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis admitted the country faced 30,000 cancellations earlier in the year costing some $39,944 in losses but said there’s still “remarkable growth,” in tourism visitors and revenues.
