Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
ASTORIA – The Daughters of Penelope (DOP) Ilion Chapter 135 of Astoria, NY held their first meeting of 2023 and cutting of the Vasilopita on January 7. They were honored to have a visit from the Empire State DOP District 6 Lodge.
Ilion President Effie Argyropoulos said: “Today is a significant day for our Chapter. We are honored to have our District 6 Lodge visiting with us. A big thank you to District Governor Lainie Damaskos-Christou, Lt. Governor Marina Patelos, District Advisor to the Daughters of Penelope Cookie Patelos, and District 6 Advisor to the Maids of Athena Sophia Christou for coming to spend the afternoon with us.”
“Not only did we have 26 Sisters attend, but we welcomed and initiated two new members,” she continued. “Also, a big thank you to the Syllogo Kreton ‘Minos’ of New York for welcoming us into their home and for their hospitality.”
“I am also happy to announce that we presented the District 6 Lodge with a donation from our Chapter on behalf of our past Chapter President, the late Mary Stell for the District Scholarships,” Argyropoulos said. “We have worked tirelessly to turn this Chapter around and I am happy to say that we currently have 47 members and are continuing to grow.”
“I have been asked why we do what we do? The answer is simple; we do what we do to raise awareness, to create positivity, to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility and Individual Excellence,” she noted. “Our membership is our greatest strength and we wear our Filotimo on our sleeve and give back to our community. This does not happen overnight, I call it a labor of love, sweat and dedication. Our goal is to leave a legacy for the next generation of Daughters, for our Maids of Athena Nymphs Astoria Chapter #119.”
