Cypriot Police Arrest Ukrainian Woman Waving Knife at Russians

LARNACA – A Ukrainian woman suspected of threatening Russians with a knife as they celebrated their National Flag Day on Cyprus – home to some 50,000 of them – was arrested by police.

The woman, aged 55, was seen holding the weapon in front of a group of about flag-waving Russians gathered in the coastal town of Larnaca, who were about to take a car convoy through the community.

Tension remains high over Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and the island is also a favorite destination for Ukrainians although Russian airlines have been banned under European Union sanctions.

The suspect wasn’t identified but was held on suspicion of common assault, public drunkenness, possession of a weapon and of disrupting the peace, police spokesman Harris Hadjiyiasemis told the semi-official Cyprus News Agency.

Earlier, a small group of Russians gathered in the city of Limassol, waving flags and creating the “Z” symbol which has become synonymous with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, noted Reuters.
