ATHENS -- “It is better to die with honor than live in shame.” Madama Butterfly’s words may make for terrible advice, but they make for great opera. Puccini’s immensely popular work, featuring a star-studded cast, will open the new season of the Greek National Opera (GNO) in early October.

Last week, the GNO announced a captivating program for its 2020 fall season, “Restart,” running from September through December. The GNO’s second online festival, centered on a selection of sophisticated Greek music, will stream in September. The program includes Don Quixote performed by the GNO Ballet and Don Giovanni, a major international co-production between the GNO, Sweden’s Göteborg Opera, and the Royal Danish Opera. The GNO is also preparing a series of forthcoming major co-productions, partnerships with European and U.S. lyric theaters, tours, and significant collaborations with leading artists.

The fall 2020 productions, as well as a yearlong program of events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 to be announced this fall, are made possible through a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) that aims to strengthen the GNO’s artistic outreach.
