Greek Culture Min meets With UNESCO Director Azoulay

September 30, 2022

MEXICO – Culture and Sports Μinister Lina Mendoni had constructive bilateral collaborations and meetings with UNESCO’s leadership and her counterparts in Mexico, on the sidelines of the work of the Mondiacult 2022 Synod, organised by the international organisation. During these meetings, Greece’s existing cultural ties were renewed and new prospects for cooperation were created.

In the working meeting between Lina Mendoni with the Director General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay, special mention was made, among other things, of the world conference, which is being organised by the ministry in collaboration with the UNESCO Center for Cultural Heritage, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the World Cultural Heritage Convention, in Delphi next November, on the subject of the effects of the climate crisis, but also of hypertourism on cultural heritage, with the participation of international personalities.

The focus of Mendoni’s discussion with the President of the UNESCO Executive Board, Tamara Rastovac Siamashvili, were the initiatives, actions and projects related to the protection of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, from the climate crisis, and especially in archaeological sites which are included in the list of World Cultural Heritage, such as Delphi, Mystras, Philippi, Ancient Olympia, as well as in our country’s positions on the protection of cultural goods from illegal trafficking.
