Cuba Invites Greece’s MeRA25 Chief Varoufakis for Cold War Talk

January 9, 2023

ATHENS – Greece’s Opposition MeRA25 leader Yanis Varoufakis will go to Cuba Jan. 25-30 to meet resident Miguel Diaz-Canel and other officials and deliver the keynote address at the the 5th International Conference for the Global Balance on the Reasons and Nature of the New Cold War.

He was invited by Cuba’s government, said Greece’s state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency ANA-MPA, which added he will meet the Minister of Finance and Prices Meisi Bolaños Weiss and ex-President of Cuba Raul Castro.

“Apart from the exchange of view on the international and geopolitical conjucture, the main issue of the discussions will be the initiative for a Progressive International that was launched with the Declaration of Athens in May 2022 and the establishment of a new non-aligned movement, the reason for the visit was said.

During his visit, Varoufakis will be accompanied by a delegation of the Progressive International and former Finance Minister and candidate President of Ecuador Andres Arauz.
Varoufakis had been finance chief for Greece’s then-ruling Radical Left SYRIZA before being ousted in a dispute with Premier Alexis Tsipras, who wanted to impose austerity measures as part of a third bailout for Greece, for 86 billion euros ($92.16 billion) in 2015 that was accepted.

Tspiras, whose party had a hard-core element of Communist sympathizers, went to Cuba to speak at the funeral of former leader Fidel Castro but has split with Varoufakis over political differences.
