Convicted of Corruption, Sarkozy Meets Mitsotakis in Athens

ATHENS – Ten months after being convicted of corruption over campaign financing violations – sentenced to a year of home confinement with a bracelet – former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was greeted at Maximos Mansion by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

There wasn’t an explanation why Sarkozy was free to travel and take a summer vacation nor what he and Mitsotakis discussed at their meeting, reported by the newspaper and web site Kathimerini.

The two men last met in Athens in 2017, two years before the New Democracy leader was elected prime minister and before Sarkozy fell out of grace and into disgrace in France. He received two jail terms but didn’t go to jail.
