Comedy ‘Bam kai Kato’ Delights the Audience at the Hellenic Cultural Center

ASTORIA – The Academy of Hellenic Paideia’s theatrical workshop ‘Logos & Praxi’ presented the comedy ‘ΜΠΑΜ ΚΑΙ ΚΑΤΩ (και καλά ξεμπερδέματα)’ (‘Bam kai Kato kai Kala Kseberdemata’), directed by Theodoros Petropoulos, for just three performances at the Hellenic Cultural Center in Astoria, wrapping up its run on June 2.

Part of the Timarete 7th Annual Hellenic Art Festival, the hilarious show delighted the audience with the antics of its talented ensemble cast including Natassa Protopsalti, Themistoklis Zanidis, Aris Tentes, Vicky Tsavalias, Yianni Koulouris, Stavroula Paralikas, Despina Paras, Eleni Kapandai, and Aristea Kapandai.

Under Petropoulos’ skillful direction, the actors created characters with great attention to detail, offering the audience a charming and funny journey through their hijinks and misunderstandings even as the plot is set in motion by a rather dark premise. In their scenes together, Protopsalti and Zanidis called to mind classic comedy duos of the past as their characters attempt to carry out a difficult duty the night before Christmas. With great stage presence, Tentes, in his theatrical debut, demonstrated a gift of comedic timing that everyone hopes he will continue to explore in upcoming shows. Tsavalias also impressed the audience with her comedic timing in a role that highlighted her range as a performer. The characters are on an emotional rollercoaster ride in this comedy which focuses on the importance of human connection and compassion even in the most difficult of times.

As the actors and director took their bows to warm applause, each was presented with a bouquet of flowers and audience members looked forward to next year’s show from the talented ‘Logos & Praxi’ theatrical workshop.

Academy of Hellenic Paideia Founder and Principal Demetra Varsami gave the welcoming remarks at the June 2 performance, noting that the Timarete Festival is dedicated to the children and promotes Hellenic art and culture while also fundraising for the development and support of educational programs to teach and preserve the Greek Language and Culture; educating children of families with economic difficulties through Academy of Hellenic Paideia’s ‘Sponsor a Student’ Program; and assisting malnourished students in Greece through the Hellenic Relief Foundation.

Timarete Festival Artistic Director Konstantinos Doikos also shared his greetings and spoke about the final weekend of this year’s festival which includes the Drama International Short Film Festival, Saturday, June 8, 1st screening 7 PM, 2nd screening 9 PM, at the Greek Cultural Center, 2680 30th Street in Astoria.

The festival’s Closing Day features the Acropolis Museum Virtual Tour led by Professor Dimitrios Pandermalis, the late President of the Board of Directors of the Acropolis Museum, Sunday, June 9, 6 PM, at the Stathakeion Cultural Center, 2251 29th Street in Astoria.
