Cold Spring Dance Company Presented ‘PROTEST!’ on November 19

COLD SPRING, NY – Cold Spring Dance Company was created in 2019 by Cally Moraytis Kordaris (formerly of Callina’s School of Dance) and Fr. Jim Kordaris to share contemporary dance with the Hudson Valley community. The mission of Cold Spring Dance is to: 1) provide live performances of professional contemporary dance to the Hudson Valley; 2) Show the connection between dance, art and nature through workshops and performances; 3) Create a scholarship program where boys and young men can train in ballet and contemporary dance at no cost.

Cold Spring Dance (CSD) had its first dance performance in May 2022, featuring dancers from the Martha Graham Company in a dance and film presentation based on the life of Andy Warhol. In fall of 2022, CSD presented a piece set to the music of Tom Waits, incorporating the paintings of local artist, Jill Shoffiet. This event included an artists’ discussion with Jill, Francisco Rivera, sculptor of Stone Ridge, NY and singer/songwriter Kat Larios of Kingston, NY. The audience was treated to a tour of the grounds by a Horticulturalist.

This past June, CSD presented a Community Art Day, which included workshops in voice and dance, art projects for the children and a short live dance presentation with dancers from Martha Graham Company.

More recently, on November 19, CSD presented a work entitled ‘PROTEST!’ a multimedia dance presentation, dealing with issues of human rights around the world, first presented 20 years ago at the Merce Cunningham Studios in New York City. This program incorporates the words of Alan Ginsburg and Jack Kerouac, and the music of Philip Glass and Stamatis Spanoudakis. Featured also was the artwork of Nicholas Kontaxis as part of the scenic design. Featured dancers were be Micah Bullard, David Wright and Elias Re from Dance Theater of Harlem, along with Nickemil Concepcion (formerly of Cedar Lake), Jennifer Buonamia (Ballet with a Twist), Kara Walsh (Armitage Dance), and Sarah Mack.

CSD welcomes dance to be completely surprised by what dance is able to communicate, through the unique experience of dance, film and narration presented in a new, thoughtful and exciting way. CSD is bringing the best contemporary dancers in New York City to their studio/performance space, in an intimate setting, seating only 40 people. This is not a sweet, Nutrcracker-type experience. This is expressive movement, communicating compelling stories about the human condition – something to which everyone can relate.

CSD is located on the former property of Mario Salvadori, an architect, engineer, author, Columbia professor, and member of the Manhattan Project. Salvadori created a STEM not-for-profit in the Harlem community that exists to this day. In this spirit, Cold Spring Dance strives to give back to the community. The company has developed a studio/performance space with state-of-the-art sound system and lighting to share live performances in the Hudson Valley. Located just northeast of the villages of Garrison and Cold Spring on East Mountain, the studio sits high on a three-acre garden/arboretum looking out over a beautiful mountain-scape.

Future plans include presentation of Cally Moraytis Kordaris’ Renaissance Contemporary Ballet, and RIZES, a production that examines Ancient and Modern Greek History and Culture, set to the music of Stamatis Spanoudakis and Vaggelis Papathanasiou.

The November 19 event also included a Mediterranean buffet dessert table and social hour for attendees. Among those present were Myrsini Feliou, the wife of Consul General of Greece in New York Dinos Konstantinou, and Maria Pardalis who noted that “the event was very rich in storytelling and… was truly worthy of Lincoln Center.”
