CLIA Calls for Delay on New Cruise Passenger Fees in Greece

September 25, 2024

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has urged the Greek government to delay the implementation of new cruise passenger fees until 2026, following a dialogue with industry stakeholders. According to Naftemporiki, this request comes after Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni announced that starting June 1, passengers disembarking from cruise ships in Mykonos and Santorini will be charged a 20-euro fee, while a 5-euro fee will apply in other Greek ports during the peak summer months.

The fee will be reduced by 40% in April, May, and October, and by 80% in the off-season months from November to March. CLIA expressed concerns about the economic impact of the new fees on cruise tourism and, as reported by Naftemporiki, called for further consultation with local authorities and tourism operators. They also noted that new berth management systems will be introduced in Santorini and Mykonos in 2025 and recommended the fee system be delayed until 2026.

CLIA welcomed the Minister’s emphasis on the importance of port infrastructure improvements and the promotion of new destinations, aligning with the organization’s Action Plan for Greece introduced last year.
