China Gets Behind Lagging Cyprus Reunification Hopes

September 20, 2016

China’s new ambassador to Cyprus, Huang Xingyuan, said his country supports the reunification of the island divided since an unlawful Turkish invasion in 1974.

An official statement said the President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris on Sept. 19 received China’s diplomat as they talked about issues and relations, including the on-again, off-again unity talks between Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

Syllouris also noted that China, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has influence that could assist in the talks that have foiled generations of diplomats and envoys.
