ATHENS — "The agreement with Italy for the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is undoubtedly positive," SYRIZA's spokesperson Alexis Charitsis said on Wednesday in an interview with Mega TV. Provided, he added, "that the government does not stop at the EEZ, but also proceeds to expand the coastal zone to 12 miles in the Ionian, as was planned by the SYRIZA government."
"We are not going to follow the path taken by New Decocracy (ND) when it was main opposition on critical national issues. I remind you that in 2018, when the SYRIZA government announced the start of talks for an agreement with Albania, ND reacted with irresponsible populism," Charitsis pointed out.
"What we are interested in is the bigger picture. We see that Turkey is not as isolated as the government believed over the recent period, but which affects developments while the government is not taking any initiatives," he said.
He said that the government's chosen policy of appeasing Turkey was wrong, as was the decision to link the refugee issue with Greek-Turkish affairs. These options have led to an increase in migration flows and overflights of Turkish aircraft over Evros, he said.
Charitsis reiterated the need to "convene a council of political party leaders, as other opposition parties are calling for, in order to develop a national foreign policy strategy."
