NEW YORK – The Greek islands are the most sought after tourist destination in the world. CEOWorld magazine listed its picks for the best Greek islands to visit in 2020. Topping the very short list of only seven islands was Santorini, followed by Skopelos, Crete, Kefalonia, Corfu, Naxos, and Hydra.
CEOWorld recommends visiting the islands via chartered yachts for a unique travel experience.
Santorini is, of course, well known as a tourist destination, and visiting in the off season offers the amazing views without the crowds. Part of the Cyclades, the island features the iconic whitewashed homes and blue-domed churches that grace countless photos taken during stunning sunsets year-round.
Skopelos is a charming destination, perhaps best known as one of the locations where Mama Mia was filmed in 2007. Visitors will recognize that the wedding procession was filmed at the Agios Ioannis Chapel in Glossa. The architecture of the island is also impressive and the town of Skopelos was honored as a Traditional Settlement of Outstanding Beauty in 1978.
Crete is also on the list and well known for its natural beauty, beaches, and delicious cuisine. With splendid resorts, sun-dappled villages, ancient Minoan sites, nightlife in Chania and Rethymno, mountain hiking, and wonderful beaches, the largest Greek island has something for every visitor.
Kefalonia in the Ionian Sea though hit by the rare hurricane in the Mediterranean this year also made the list for its beautiful landscapes, beaches, and rich history.
Corfu also in the Ionian Sea made the list for its great beaches and culture to explore.
Naxos, a fertile, mountainous island in the Cyclades, is also on the list for its natural beauty and great beaches.
The island of Hydra is recommended for its proximity to Athens and picturesque harbor town with stone houses on rocky hillsides. Famous as a retreat for artists, writers and celebrities, Hydra is also known for its lack of motorized vehicles (apart from sanitation trucks).
