British Tourist on Rhodes Found Drowned, Another Missing on Samos

RHODES – Greece’s deadly summer for tourists has continued with the discovery of the body of a 48-year-old British man who was missing on Rhodes, found drowned on a beach, and a 64-year-old Dutch visitor missing on the island of Samos.

On Rhodes, authorities said the tourist who wasn’t named had gone swimming with his niece at Theologos Beach and that his body was found at Paradisi Beach some 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) by a local resident, no other details given.

She said she left the beach and that he remained and that when he didn’t return after several hours she went there looking for him and then notified authorities who dispatched two Coast Guard boats and private boats.

On Samos, near the coast of Turkey, a search and rescue operation is continuing for the Dutch woman who vanished after telling a friend she wanted to walk around the 0.6 mile Eupalinos Tunnel, an ancient aqueduct going through Mount Kastro.

The summer began tragically with a spate of missing tourists found some dead and some still not found. In June, British TV doctor Michael Mosley died on Symi after walking during a heatwave, sparking a days-long search.

In July, four more foreigners disappeared, including a 23-year-old Slovak man who went missing near Ioannina and two French tourists, aged 73 and 64, who vanished on the remote island of Sikinos.
