British Base Migrants Face Deadline

A British official says migrants who arrived by boat at a British air base on Cyprus last month have until this Nov. 21 to claim asylum in the east Mediterranean island nation or face being deported back to Lebanon.

Sean Tully, spokesman for Britain’s two military bases on Cyprus, says for those who chose not to claim asylum, Bases authorities will then decide whether or not to issue a deportation order and migrants will have one week to mount a legal challenge to it.

He said so far, only a “small number” of the 114 migrants — mostly from Syria, Lebanon and Palestine — have submitted asylum applications to Cypriot authorities.
