Astoria: More than Greek, But Still Greek

You can still go to Astoria for Greek food, but it certainly won’t be the only cuisine of choice, reports the New York Daily News. The number of non-only-Greek restaurants increased by 57 percent between 2001 and 2011 according to study by Economic Development Corp., the News reports. In fact, Greek restaurants finish in fourth place, behind places that feature American, Italian, and Chinese cuisine, according to the News. “The mainstays are still here,” said State Sen. Michael Gianaris, who was born in Astoria to Greek parents, told the News. But the neighborhoods shifting demographics are reflected in what’s on the plate. Astoria residents have known for year that although their neighborhood’s flavor is still strongly Greek, there are other tastes to savor and cultures to experience in New York’s current – there have been others – Greektown. The rest of the world is finally paying attention to the changes. See the full article at: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/queens/astoria-longer-greek-food-article-1.1757480
