Arsonists Run Amok in Athens’ Anarchist Neighborhood, Residents Rally

ATHENS – The Greek anarchist neighborhood of Exarchia and another have been hit with attacks by arsonists burning vehicles at random, the fires near residences and leading residents to protest and set up a defense plan.

While in the neighborhood of Zografou, a group of masked people set fire to five school buses, six cars and three motorcycles, the concern is especially high in Exarchia, the scene of clashes between anarchists and riot police.

“To put it simply, we are not having a good time,” an Exarchia business owner not named told Kathimerini. Business owners and residents called for a March 16 protest and a flier was distributed by a group called Coordinated Action for the Defense of Exarchia.

That was called after it was said police haven’t been able to stop the fire attacks. “They have become more aggressive. Something must be done,” said another businessman who didn’t want to be named, fearing retaliation.

The report said that the masked gangs are targeting apartments in Exarchia that were turned into short-term rentals, which drove out residents and saw rents soar in the neighborhood known for its funkiness and anti-establishment stance.
