ATHENS – The Christmas season was welcomed to Athens with a spirited tree lighting ceremony at the renowned Hotel Grande Bretagne with style and grace, as would be expected, along with the pleasant surprise of the voices and laughter of elementary school students.

The lobby was beautifully decorated and the huge live tree that seems to burst through the ceiling was revealed with curtains drawn open to the delight of the guests after a wonderful concert of Christmas songs and carols sung by the children.

The gracious host for the gathering enlivened by complimentary champagne for the adults and costumed characters on stilts for the children was the hotel’s Managing Director, Greek-American Tim Ananiadis, who welcomed and wished Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all, and dedicated the joyous 3 PM affair to the children.

The Greek capital decks itself out very nicely for the holidays but the Christmas tree at the beloved G.B. across the street from the Parliament building is arguably the most elegant and vibrant in town.

Holiday patrons attending the live jazz Wednesday nights and Opera Night on Thursdays – both 8-11 PM in the hotel’s chic Winter Garden off the lobby – will soon be greeted by a large Christmas tree and bursts of holiday lights across the street in Syntagma Square.
