Endless Jeopardy for Greece’s Former Statistics Chief Georgiou

Unlike United States where there’s a double jeopardy law and if you’re acquitted of a crime you can shout from the rooftops you did it and can’t be charged again, in Greece prosecutors and governments can keep coming at you to find scapegoats.

The double jeopardy concept preventing repeated prosecution goes back to Ancient Greece, but in Modern Greece the injustice system is so uneven most people accused of even a serious crime won’t have their names revealed. While it can take a decade or longer for some trials, if a government wants to get you, you’re in court the next day faster than you can say double jeopardy, a perverse game show here. The insane case of Andreas Georgiou, a former International Monetary Fund (IMF) official who headed Greece’s statistics agency ELSTAT that produced a report showing the country would need an international bailout in 2010 shows the nonsense that passes as a legal system in the country.

His middle name should be scapegoat he’s been targeted so much by a series of governments, none more so than the Looney Radical Left-Right SYRIZA looking for someone to blame for the economic crisis and Premier Alexis “Che” Tsipras’ constant reneging on anti-austerity promises.

Georgiou was convicted on a minor technicality but acquitted of more serious charges that were so ridiculous they’d get laughed out the court Alice in Wonderland faced, but politicians here wanted off with his head anyway.

Cleared of any real crimes because he hadn’t committed any, Georgiou – who wisely hightailed it back to the United States where there’s an actual court system – was targeted again by a prosecutor and his acquittal was annulled – for a second time – by the country’s highest Kangaroo Court.

Georgiou had been accused of falsifying budget data in order to justify Greece’s first international bailout, a charge that was yesterday’s b--sh-t with a little chicken spread on it and as phony as the claims by Tsipras that 10 rival politicians took bribes from the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis.

But this is a country where crimes are routinely manufactured for political purposes and the rich and powerful, even if they’re charged, can laugh all the way to the bank because they’re not even going to court.

His case will go before the Council of Appeals Court Judges who have already cleared him twice of any wrongdoing and will do so again, which will lead to prosecutors coming after him again, in absentia, instead of the Golden Dawn neo-Nazi crazies who are in the third year – year! – of their infrequent trial on charges of running a criminal gang, which it is.

Anyone sane knows Georgiou is innocent and he’s been backed by the European Union’s statistics agency Eurostat, so unless you think the conspiracy extends to Brussels - maybe even the Zionists, the Masons, the Skull and Bones, the Trilateral Commission and the Bilderberg Group, the only real crime here is being perpetrated against him and for that some prosecutors should lose their licenses to practice unless it’s for witchcraft too.

The American Statistical Association (ASA) and the International Statistical Institute (ISI) said his math added up too but Greek politicians prefer the Foghorn Leghorn School, the one where, “There’s something going on here that just don’t add up.” No kidding.

“International commentators are increasingly stating openly that political factors appear to be driving this prolonged prosecution of Andreas Georgiou to serve interests of political forces within Greece and that this will be maintained until the ‘right’ decision is achieved,” the ISI said.

“Such perceptions are very damaging for the Greek judicial system and for Greece in general, its democracy and its hoped for economic recovery,” it added.

ISI said it was “extremely puzzling” that the Supreme Court kept dismissing acquittals and wouldn’t accept that math is math - another ancient Greek teaching specialty - so it’s as plain that President Hump is as crazy as the day is long that the Georgiou case is being driven by a desire to get him.

“The International Statistical Institute calls upon the Greek State to stop these inconsistencies and this injustice,” ISI added, but it was ignored too because nothing else matters in this case except dunking Georgiou in a well and trying to drown him for being able to count while politicians, prosecutors and judges can’t.

So the Greek state will keep going after him like a politician chasing a free lunch instead of prosecutors looking into cases like that of Defense Minister Panos “Empty Suit” Kammenos breaking a law and using a broker for a sweet Saudi arms deal.

Kammenos is leader of the pro-austerity, marginal, jingoistic Dependent Greeks who are the very junior varsity partners in the fragile coalition headed by SYRIZA and he has carried so much water for Tsipras his name should be Aquarius.

He was defended by the likes of SYRIZA’s Very Foreign Minister Nikos “Stalinist” Kotzias, who said his right-wing buddy Kammenos was having “terrible things” said about him, which must have hurt his feelings.

There aren’t enough terrible things that can be said about the people pushing the harebrained prosecution of Georgiou who is guilty only of telling the truth, the biggest crime there is in Greece, and there’s something here that just don’t add up, but his accusers don’t count anyway.
