BRUSSELS -- Vice President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas, speaking at the Conference of the Delegation of the European Commission in Greece, EUandU, on "Science and innovation in our daily lives" on Monday stressed the important role of science.

"During the difficult days I was fighting the coronavirus from a hospital bed, the only hopeful thought that supported me with faith for tomorrow was my belief that science would provide the solution to this great problem. We are really now at the critical point where science is once again proving to be the hope of humanity," said Schinas.

"Let us not forget something that is exclusively European, that is the value imprint of Europe," he said, adding that "Europe is Europe, because it is a beacon of the values that have always been the leavening of Community policies, but it has also been the capability to promote this European model on a larger scale."

This is the third year that the EUandU conference is being held but, due to the pandemic, this year it is taking place online and broadcast simultaneously from Athens, Brussels, Heraklion and Patras.
