Two Arrested for Tossing Water Bottles, Coffee Cups at Athens’ Mayor

ATHENS -- Greek police arrested two people who were in a crowd throwing water bottles and coffee cups at Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyiannis, although it wasn’t said what  provoked the attack.

Bakoyiannis, who has earned praise for trying to beautify the capital, including renovating Omonia Square and helping create the Grand Walk that eliminates traffic lanes in favor of pedestrian walks and bicycle routes, as at an event in the area of Metaxourgio, who has a large migrant population.

The two men detained, who were not named, were to appear before a prosecutor on June 29 after the incident the night before when around 20 people tossed the objects, said Kathimerini in a report.

The group who went after Bayoyiannis fled the scene while they were being booed by some local residents, the paper also said of the assault on the New Democracy politician. It wasn’t indicated whether the assault was politically-motivated or why it had happened.
