ATHENS – Some 2 ½ months after the murder of investigative reporter Giorgos Karaivaz, gunned down outside his home, gas canisters were used outside the home of prominent journalist Ioannis Pretenderis.

No injuries were reported in the attack which took place June 30 at 4.10 a.m. in the Athens suburb of Neo Psychiko, said Kathimerini, the act condemned by the New Democracy government.

“Freedom of speech and pluralism are fundamental elements of a democracy,” government spokeswoman Aristotelia Peloni said in a statement. “An attack on journalists is an attack by the enemies of democracy against these principles,” she said, echoing what was said after the Karaivaz killing.

Two private vehicles were slightly damaged in the attack but no details were given on whether there was a fire or what happened, as police are investigating.
