Greece Tries Yet Again to Ban, Control Outdoor Advertising

ATHENS -- Ten years after trying to ban billboards blamed for road accidents and fatalities, Greece now has turned to prohibit advertisements on sidewalks, streets and highways, this time aesthetically-driven.

Saying the ads are an eyesore and prevalent everywhere – they flourish during political campaigns and many are left to peel off posts and walls by themselves, the New Democracy government is the latest to try to stop them.

The ban also includes advertising at archaeological sites and monuments without the approval of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and buildings housing public services, cemeteries, public sector technical projects and construction sites, said Kathimerini.

As for bus stops, for the first time there is a ban on billboards on roads where the speed limit is more than 70 kilometers per hour.

On roads with a speed limit of less than 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) per house, billboards that were supposed to be banned can only be positioned so that they face oncoming traffic on the other side of the road.

There was no word on how the ban would be enforced of if there were fines or any other actions for offenders who could be identified.
