HULL, England - In the British port city of Hull Artemis Greek Taverna was opened by Yiannis Makris and his wife Mata, who had operated another restaurant before leaving to cook for family and friends and private commissions.

The pair come from Volos and he is at the front of the restaurant while she does the cooking, giving up a career in electronic engineering – she has a degree from the University of Hull – because of her passion for food. That led her to set up shop cooking Greek food for dinner parties, weddings and events, said BDaily News, adding that the couple spent two months renovating the site that had been another restaurant.

Mata said: “all the women in Greece can cook. You learn to cook from a very early age and the knowledge and the secrets are passed down through the generations. I have the recipes and the ingredients locked away. Yiannis is front – he’s not allowed to cook in my kitchen!”

Yiannis added: “The majority of our products are imported from Greece, including Greek beer and wine, and everything else will be sourced locally, including from our allotment.”
