NEW YORK -- Queue up your favorite oksivafon album and dive into the fantastical world of Byzantine musical instruments through a new digital exhibition showcasing their depiction on objects from pitchers to caskets.

Echos of an Empire is part of the Byzantine Musical Instruments project from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies at Koç University in Istanbul and the Friends of Music Society in Athens.

The SNF made a founding grant to the Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies, which was dedicated in 2015. SNF has made establishing and expanding Hellenic studies programs in a number of academic institutions outside Greece a significant focus at a time when the field as a whole faces diminishing resources. In addition to the center at Koç University, SNF has supported programs in the U.S., Canada, and the UK.
