WASHINGTON, DC – On Tuesday, October 27, 7 PM EST, The Hellenic Society Prometheas commemorates OXI Day with an online event including a greeting by Ambassador of Greece to the United States, Alexandra Papadopoulou, and an illustrated presentation by James L. Marketos, Esq., titled, Greek War Relief: America’s Formidable Response to Famine in World War II Greece.

In late 1940, Greece’s unexpected victory over Mussolini’s invasion forces electrified the free world. For the first time since the beginning of World War II, a free nation had defeated an Axis power on land. In the U.S., Greece’s heroic resistance against the Axis forces galvanized an unprecedented response: “Greek War Relief,” an immensely successful charitable giving campaign organized within a matter of days after October 28, 1940, to raise funds for Greece.

The campaign was particularly successful for uniting the public relations skills of prominent Greek-American businesspeople, particularly in the movie industry, with the natural sympathies of ordinary Americans, who saw Greeks willing to die for the sake of liberty as true heroes.

In his illustrated presentation (in English), Marketos will recall the mostly forgotten story of Greek War Relief and its stunning successes.
