Greek Study Examines the Use of Colchicine in Preventing COVID-19 Heart and Lung Complications

ATHENS - A Greek study titled Grecco-19 will examine the use of colchicine in preventing the heart and lung complications of Covid-19, Greek pharmaceuticals manufacturer Elpen announced on Wednesday.

Colchicine has been a drug tested for several years in cardiology, and has been used safely in acute myocardial infarction with promising results.

Grecco-19 is a Greek initiative and will be conducted at 24 research centers in Greece, with the help of Greek and foreign scientists. The study is sponsored by the Hellenic Society of Rhythmology, which specializes in heart arrhythmia. Participation is on a voluntary basis for patients, and so far 100 of the 180 total foreseen in the study have joined.

Preliminary results are expected by the end of April.
