Archbishop Elpidophoros in Cyprus for AHEPA Supreme Convention

July 22, 2024

BOSTON – Archbishop Elpidophoros of America has been in Cyprus since the afternoon of Sunday, July 21, to participate in AHEPA’s Supreme Convention, which is being held on the island from July 21-27.

The event coincides with the 50th dark anniversary of the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus – more than 30,000 troops still occupy 37% of the island, despite numerous protests and demonstrations through the years and multiple decisions of the United Nations.

It is emphasized that Archbishop Elpidophoros has traveled to Cyprus at the invitation of the current leadership of AHEPA, some of whom originate from the martyred island. It is noted, however, that Archbishop Elpidophoros has attended the Supreme Convention every year since his first year in the United States as Archbishop.

At the airport, he was welcomed by AHEPA officials headed by Supreme President Savas Tsivicos and a government protocol representative. By coincidence, he also met with Greece’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georgios Gerapetritis and Greek MPs who were departing for Athens after participating in events in Cyprus over the weekend.
