Angry Greek Anarchists Splash Paint Outside Toy Store CEO’s Home

December 21, 2020

ATHENS – The anarchist group Rouvikonas (Rubicon) targeted the home of Jumbo toy store Chief Executive Officer Apostolos Vakakis in an attack that saw them splash paint and toss fliers outside his home.

Jumbo is a dominant provider of toys and seasonal goods and especially busy during a lockdown during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group saying it acted in a protest over labor rights, reported Kathimerini.

In a recent interview, Vakakis said that once the coronavirus restrictions are lifted, companies should be given the right to operate on a 7-day, 12-hour basis so that they can meet increased consumer demand ahead of Easter.

Upset with that, Rouvikonas put a post on the Internet saying that his  “philosophy” was tantamount to “a violation of workers’ rights,” as they had also joined other critics against Sunday openings.

“Today, we visited Vakakis’ residence to share our philosophy,” the group said, an act denounced by Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis who said that, “Every home is a sacred place,” taking a shot.

The New Democracy government allowed seasonal goods stores to open for the holidays and retailers can sell goods through a click-and-collect method in which they can place orders or the phone or online and make a reservation to pick them up.
