ATHENS – The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has named Angeliki Kalligiannaki as its new Head of Greece, effective September 1st. She succeeds Andreea Moraru, who was recently appointed as the Bank’s Regional Director for Poland and the Baltic States.
Kalligiannaki, a Greek national, has been with the EBRD since 2013, taking on various roles in Risk Management, Treasury, and at the Bank’s Warsaw office before moving to Athens in 2016. In her current position as Associate Director, Senior Banker, within the Manufacturing and Services team, she has played a significant role in driving the Bank’s efforts to support Greece’s economic recovery, including through the implementation of the Greek Recovery and Resilience Facility Co-Financing Framework.
Prior to her time at the EBRD, Kalligiannaki worked as a Quantitative Analyst at S&P’s Capital IQ and in the Derivatives Valuation Unit at the European Investment Bank.
In her new role, Kalligiannaki is committed to advancing the EBRD’s mission in Greece, where the Bank focuses on strengthening competitiveness by expanding the private sector, supporting sustainable energy and infrastructure, and enhancing the resilience of the financial sector. She emphasized the importance of maintaining robust relationships with Greek authorities, corporations, and financial institutions to ensure that the Bank remains a trusted partner in the country’s long-term development.
The EBRD began its operations in Greece in 2015 at the request of the Greek government, initially on a temporary basis, to support critical reforms and help return the country to economic growth. With the Bank’s mandate extended until 2025, the EBRD has invested over €7.8 billion in 114 projects across sectors such as corporate, financial, energy, and infrastructure. These investments, backed by donor-funded technical assistance and policy dialogue, are designed to strengthen Greece’s economy, attract foreign and domestic investment, and deepen regional integration.
Notable projects include efforts in non-performing loan resolution, securitisations, and bond issuances, alongside major property developments and renewable energy initiatives like The Ellinikon, Piraeus Tower, and the Kozani renewable energy project. Greece, a founding member of the EBRD, has also contributed significantly as a donor, supporting investments and policy measures that promote integration and economic recovery.
Established to aid in the post-Cold War reconstruction of Central and Eastern Europe, the EBRD has since grown into a key institution for driving economic transformation in the region and beyond. To date, the Bank has invested more than €190 billion across over 7,000 projects, drawing on its deep expertise to foster sustainable development.
