June 21, 2021

Simon Fraser University (SFU), located in British Columbia, Canada, held its Chancellor's Virtual Reception on Monday, June 21, 2021. SFU's Chancellor, Tamara Vrooman alongside President and co-Chancellor Joy Johnson hosted an hour-long virtual Zoom Conference honoring 5 distinguished individuals who were bestowed honorary degrees by SFU.

The honorees were Andreas Dracopoulos, Michael J. Fox, Victor Hayes, Theresa Tam and Siila (Sheila) Watt-Cloutier. Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) co-President Andreas Dracopoulos' honorary degree is the byproduct of his exemplary philanthropic work with SNF and also the foundation's ever increasing ties to SFU and their research projects.

Upon receiving his honorary degree, Mr. Dracopoulos made remarks in which he fondly remembered the late Dr. André Gerolymatos (1951-2019) who served as director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies and was a distinguished professor at SFU. Mr. Dracopoulos credited "If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here today, his passion, determination, hard work and the collaborative spirit made us (SNF) come to Simon Fraser and start the Centre for Hellenic Studies. So, I thank him and his wife Beverly." Mr. Dracopoulos then thanked his late uncle Stavros Niarchos (1909-1996) owing his late uncle's good financial fortunes a debt of gratitude and the reason the opportunity exists SNF to do good around the world.

Andreas Dracopoulos accepted his honorary degree flanked by his two of his three children: Arianne and Constantine.
