Amendments in the Penal Code Provide for Stricter Penalties

ATHENS — The amendments in the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure ratified in the cabinet meeting on Monday, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, provide for stricter penalties for heinous crimes, sexual crimes, crimes against minors and gender based violence.

They also provide for an extension of the time of release under conditions for serious offenders and lifers.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Justice, the amendments in both Codes proposed by Justice Minister Konstantinos Tsiaras and ratified by the cabinet meeting will be immediately put to public consultation.


ATHENS — Greece's coast guard on Monday prevented at least 590 migrants from illegally entering the country's waters in the eastern Aegean Sea from neighboring Turkey in assorted vessels, authorities said.
