After Engineer’s Murder, Greek Police Try to Stifle Mobsters on Mykonos

July 11, 2024

ATHENS – The shooting death in the Greek capital of a civil engineer who did work on Mykonos has led police to try to rein in reported organized crime on the popular island that is seeking rampant construction taking over for profit.

Panagiotis Stathis, 54, was gunned down in his car by a shooter on a scooter, with police later arresting a suspect after tracking him on surveillance video and finding he had switched to his own motorcycle after the killing.

Supreme Court prosecutor Georgia Adeilini called for the investigation to include alleged mobsters on the island and reported intimidations, after an archaeologist who worked there was also nearly beaten to death in Athens.

A special prosecutor is looking into the island although police have been largely unable to stop organized crime violence in Athens but were able to round up a suspect in this case, drawing a further focus on mob activity on the island.

Reports said that rival gangs are fighting each other for control of entertainment on the island, especially clubs, catering and property sales as it has been overrun by tourists and known for price gouging and tax evasion.

The case file of the suspect – not  named – reportedly said he was tied to the abduction of wealthy businessman Pericles Panagopoulos in 2009, freed after a $30 million ransom was paid the kidnappers.

Stathis’ female partner reportedly testified that they visited Mykonos twice in the months before the murder and that the suspect allegedly met a man in the real estate market with whom the engineer had allegedly quarreled with before.

Police were said to be examining Stathis’ activities on Mykonos, which he visited weekly, to try to find a motive for the killing and who was behind ordering his death, with government officials, a contractor and professionals questioned.

There have been a number of cases of beatings, planting bombs and extortion that haven’t been solved on the island and also said to be linked to growing organized crime, and assaults of victims in Athens instead of Mykonos.

The suspect was due to testify July 11 and state broadcaster ERT said he would say that neither of two murder weapons had been found and that he wouldn’t accept any amount of money to kill Stathis.
