After 69 Years, 4 Owners, Gus’ Restaurant Prospers in Ontario

Gus' Restaurant opened in Sudbury, Ontario in Canada in 1952 after Gus Lagges, who immigrated from Greece, started the eatery that's remained so popular, even through the COVID-19 pandemic that in 2022 it will mark its 70th anniversary.

He passed away in 1984 and the business that specializes in breakfast fare passed on to his nephew Peter Moutsatsos until he retiring, turning it over to his friends Gus and Matina Pontikakos.

When they retired too, the business was acquired in 2013 by Fania and Spyros Koutroumanos who said they suffered some culture and weather shock when they landed in December that year in below zero weather.

They told Sudbury.com that they have learned so much about the past through the customers. In keeping with tradition, Fania says generations of families sit in the same booth for every visit.

“If these walls had a voice, they could share so many more memories that I have not had the chance to hear already,” she said.

The couple said they will mark the platinum celebration with items from the original menu and its $2 dishes, tucked away in an envelope.
