After 61 Years, Louie’s in Manhasset Gets Modern Look

NEW YORK – In Manhasset on Long Island in New York, Louie’s restaurant has been a staple for 61 years and has gotten a do-over to look different than it did in 1963 and over the years but the recipe for success hasn’t changed.

“We really are that place where everybody knows your name – cheers, but with food, good food,” Tommy Pagonis, who has worked at his family’s eatery for 43 years told Newsday in explaining what kept it going, even through COVID.


He said the mission hasn’t changed either, not since his father Ilias – Louie – hung up the sign with his name on it and invited everyone in to try Greek food. Louie came from Sparta to Canada to New York.

It was there he worked for his uncle Andromitis, who opened Andy’s Luncheonette in Manhasset – which Louie bought and changed the name. In 1974, he lost the lease and moved across the street. “Everyone is treated the same — my mother has to wait for a table,” he said.
