The Greek Aegean island of Ikaria is famed as being one of the world's five Blue Zones for high life expectancy, and the food and wine is a good part of that – both now available in a way right at Sydney's famed Bondi Beach in Australia.
Ikaria is a new meze bar there, inspired by the island, created by the husband-and-wife team of Joaquin Saez and Emily Abay, the Aegean meeting the South Pacific ocean, a Greek island inside and the beach out the front window.
Abay, also a fashion photographer, created an interior reminiscent of a Greek island eatery, said the site Concrete Playground, and oh, there's that view.
Head chef Robert Young has created a menu of Mediterranean favorites, including Ikarian-styled taramosalata served with warm pita bread for dipping, saganaki with chestnut honey and crisp zucchini chips matched with herb aioli.
Octopus is grilled, and teamed with loukaniko and salsa verde featured with a plate of Greek-style lamb meatballs, the food downed with wine and Greece's Mythos lager along with local beers, Australia known for that, and you can drift off to the island too.
