Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
The author is correct (‘Sudden Resignations at Hellenic College-Holy Cross’ – TNH September 7). The continuous drama of “sudden resignations” at Holy Cross School of Theology has reached the level of a Greek tragedy. Sophocles, an ancient dramatist, would consider this recent trend a modern tragic drama. To witness such a turnover of administrators and professors at the only Greek Orthodox School of Theology in America is indeed, unfortunate. The ‘What, Where, When and How’ are clearly spelled out. But we await to find out the ‘WHY’.
On the job as Dean of the School of Theology since January 2024, Fr. Eugen Pentiuc cites “health reasons” for leaving his post. Basically, he completed only one semester, not counting the summer. However, he “will continue to teach during the semester.” Apparently, he developed health issues in that position; and expects to feel much better in the classroom. The same scenario can be applied to Fr. Parsenios who preceded Fr. Pentiuc and served as Dean for a very short time as well. The latter found refuge at St. Nicholas Church in Lexington, MA.
But, there’s more! Just weeks later, another resignation followed. The Director of Student Life, Dean of Students, Fr. Patrick O’Rourke walked away. He, also will assume a position in a church community. Just as we’re trying to digest these changes, we learn that a professor of Greek Language and Culture also resigned and is on her way to accept another university post elsewhere.
I and others are waiting with bated breath to find out the reason for such an active ‘Revolving Door’ at the college and seminary. We’re hoping for follow-up interviews with school leaders to better understand the motivation for these continuous departures. What do these professionals encounter that causes them to run for the exits? We look forward to Mr. Kalmoukos’ investigative report.
