Single Malt Scotch usually means springing at least $40 for a bottle, usually a bit more in New York City. So if you come across a bottle selling for $30 or less – be suspicious. Be very suspicious. If it sounds too good to be true – it usually is.
A welcome exception to that rule, though, is the Highland Single Malt Tomatin. The 12-year-old standard version sells for well under $40, and closer to $30. At 43% alcohol (86 proof), it packs a bit more of a punch than the standard 80 proof for spirits, but nowhere near the cask strength range of other Single malts.
In terms of taste, I certainly wouldn’t call it exquisite – but it’s very drinkable, and I’d take it over most blended varieties – and it’s just a few dollars more.
If you want a Scotch above the usuals, without spending an arm and a leg for a top-of-the-line Single Malt, Tomatin is a good find.
