As the crisis in Greece spirals to new levels of loss of control, these are “vexing days” for the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, a group of about 120 members, Bloomberg News observes, and describes the bipartisan caucus as “among the largest, and most diligent” in Congress.

“Since we’ve had a caucus, not a single anti-Greek bill has passed Congress,” said Representative Carolyn Maloney of New York, Bloomberg reported.

But regarding Greece, “we’re involved, but it’s really only on a limited basis,” added Representative Gus Bilirakis of Florida.

It was Bilirakis’ father, Mike, who was also a Congressman from Florida, who formed the Hellenic Caucus with Maloney in 1996. The younger Bilirakis formed a related group, the Congressional Hellenic Israeli Alliance two years ago, with fellow Florida Congressman Ted Deutch.

“We’ve been trying to encourage the allies to work with Greece,” Bilirakis said, Bloomberg reported, but there is only so much the caucus can do. As Maloney put it, financial aid to Greece by the United States is unlikely, as “we are $18 trillion in debt.”
