Cyprus Upset With UN Appeasement

NICOSIA – Cyprus’ government has blasted UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for failing to condemn Turkey’s violation of the country’s sovereign waters by a Turkish energy research vessel and warship in the island’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Speaking to state broadcaster RIK, Cyprus government spokesman Nikos Christodoulides criticized the UN chief for “maintaining an equal distance” between the two sides, adding that the Security Council ought to keep a clear stand in cases of sovereign rights’ violations.

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades recently sent a letter to Ban to complain about Turkey’s recent moves in the region but the UN leader is notorious for not wanting to make waves nor ruffle feathers.

Peace talks between the two sides, Christodoulides said, will only resume after Turkey withdraws from Cyprus’s EEZ and recognizes the island’s sovereign rights.
