ATHENS – Nikos Hatzis, who plays for the struggling Ilisiakos club in Greece’s basketball league, isn’t a well-known figure but now holds the honor of setting the record for most point scored.
Hatzis scored 19 points to help his team beat Ikaros Halkidas 79-71 on March 29, keeping its hopes alive in the league and giving him a career total of 5,184 points, surpassing Angelos Koronios, who had scored 5,170 points in his career.
Hatzis is also the record-holder in games played in the top division. Ilisiakos is in a three-way tie at the bottom of theleague with Ikaros and Panelefsiniakos.
With the junior Greek national team, Chatzis won the gold medal at both the 1993 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship and also at the 1995 FIBA Under-19 World Championship. He also appeared in 69 games for the Greek national team and scored 336 points.
