PIRAEUS – Buoyed by the return of captain Vassilis Spanoulis, Olympiakos kept its hopes of repeating as the European basketball champion alive with an 89-59 destruction of the Spanish team Laboral Kutxa.
The Reds are trying to earn a quarterfinal berth and turned around a losing stream with an easy win it needed to keep going. They easily dismantled Laboral, which only a week before had beaten the other dominant Greek team, Panathinaikos.
It was no contest from the get-go as Olympiakos ran away to a 45-27 half time lead, with 10,000 screaming fans in support, allowing coach Giorgos Bartzokas to empty his bench and give the subs playing time too.
With three tough games ahead, the win brought Olympiaks to 5-6 in Euroleague play, one less than eternal rival Panathinaikos. Spanoulis scored 14 points, beaten only by Matt Lojeski, scorer of 16 on the night.
