Ukraine Says Yanukovych On Mt. Athos

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled the capital Kiev after opposition leaders took over and was thought to be in Russian-speaking areas of his country where he had a stronghold, may be hiding on Greece’s  Mount Athos, Ukrainian media reported.

Kathimerini reporter Costas Onishenko, who is in Kiev, said that the rumor has not been confirmed but that local media outlets are reporting that Yanukovych has fled the country for the Greek semi-autonomous monastic community.

Yanukovich was stripped of his powers by Ukrainian Parliament on Feb. 22. On Feb. 25  Parliament voted to send the ex-president to the International Criminal Court in The Hague to answer charges in connection with the death of 82 protesters in Kiev last week.
