ATHENS – Third Country Nationals living in Greece without legal documents and working in undeclared jobs shouldn’t be getting residency permits as the government plans, former premier and a previous New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras said.
He said that it would lead to Greece becoming a “beacon for attracting illegal immigrants” at the same time the government is trying to keep them out and even been accused of pushbacks, which it has denied doing.
“The need to solve the labor problem can be done through domestic potential, and of course with legal immigration and transnational fixed-term agreements where immigrants will return to their countries,” he said.
Third Country Nationals are those who are in transit and/or applying for visas in countries to reach another country, whom the European Union also identifies as foreign nationals.
Labor and Social Welfare Minister Adonis Georgiadis said “it is unfair to the government and the Prime Minister personally to present them as supporters of an open border policy,” pushing back against the criticism.
Some 30,000 long term foreigners living in the country will be eligible under the scheme being presented to Parliament by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ administration as it’s looking to foreign workers to fill agricultural jobs.
It will give them three-year permits under an insurance bill as Greece has seen seasonal jobs lacking workers with other migrants, especially Albanians, moving on to other European countries instead.
An estimated 30,000 long-term residents of Greece will be impacted by the modification, which was added to the insurance bill on Friday and is presently being considered by Parliament.
The government decided to introduce this specific provision at this moment because the Greek labor market is under more strain due to the exodus of migrants – Albanians for example – to other European nations. This is primarily because citizens of third countries can more readily obtain documentation and have better access to the employment market in other European countries.
The law applies to people who were in Greece through the end of November 2023, while strict penalties would be on the books for employers who do not declare workers.
In Greece’s biggest prefecture of Attica there are some 149,000 foreigners’ residence permits still awaiting renewal and overdue because there’s not enough staff to process them, leaving those affected in limbo.
A clean criminal record, payment of a 300-euro deposit, submission of a solemn declaration by the employer through the Single Digital Portal of Public Administration committing to employ the applicant, and a passport are required.
