ATHENS – “The country is going through a very serious health crisis, and at this stage it is important for all citizens to be safe and healthy. Our role is not to speculate politically. But the measures taken in the labour market are in the completely opposite direction to those needed by society,” main opposition SYRIZA’s sector-head for labour issues, Effie Achtsioglou, said on Thursday in an interview with Mega TV.
She explained that the government measures will lead to mass layoffs and lower salaries. “If they continue, we will have a large wave of unemployed and poor people and this will affect the economy in general and cause a deep crisis,” she said.
Achtsioglou accused the government of “imposing a new job rotation scheme where businesses are effectively free, whether they are profitable or not, to make their staff work in rotation, with a 50 pct reduction in their salaries for six months, without any preconditions.”
