SPRINGFIELD, MA – As efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus have led to the postponement and the cancellation of many events in the Greek community, The Gray House at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral has made the decision to transform its 29th Annual Spaghetti Supper fundraiser into an online event, MassLive.com reported.

Originally scheduled for March 26 at the community’s Greek Cultural Center, restrictions on large gatherings led to the decision to host a “No Show” online fundraiser, the report continued.

The Gray House is a small neighborhood human service agency in Springfield. A news release on the agency’s website noted that “for the past 28 consecutive years, The Gray House has held its Spaghetti Supper which accounts for nearly 10% of the agency’s annual budget and is essential to our operations. Due to COVID-19, The Gray House and the Greek Cultural Center have mutually decided not to hold the event. Instead, we’re hosting a ‘No Show’ Spaghetti Supper!”

Gray House Executive Director Teresa Liberti told MassLive, “The people most impacted by this pandemic are the vulnerable individuals we serve on a regular basis and who need our help more than ever. We are anticipating increased demand for our services, especially in terms of food assistance due to the economic implications of COVID-19. We are taking precautions to protect our staff, volunteers and those we serve, especially in our market where we serve over 140 households within a three-hour period every week.”

“In lieu of buying a ticket, we encourage them to have their own spaghetti dinner at home,” Liberti said, MassLive reported.

Anyone interested in participating can purchase a “ticket” and raffles and tune in to the Gray House Facebook page on Thursday, Mar. 26. The raffle winners will be drawn via Facebook Live at 5:45 PM.

According to the Gray House news release, “Throughout the week leading up to the ‘event’ we will be posting about our prizes, recognizing our sponsors and donors, and sharing our best sauce recipes!

“Please consider making a donation for your ‘ticket’ or purchasing raffle tickets. Checks can also be sent to 22 Sheldon Street, Springfield, MA 01107 and made payable to ‘The Gray House.’ Please specify if you would like to buy raffle tickets with your check or if it is a donation.

“We would like to give a HUGE thank you to our incredible sponsors who are generously entrusting us with their donations despite not having a physical event.”
