ATHENS – “The government, instead of sending ferries to the Aegean islands to end the entrapment of thousands of migrants and refugees, as the islanders rightfully demand, organised a night-time landing and brutal invasion by riot police on Lesvos and Chios, against the residents who are fighting to prevent their islands becoming EU prisons,” stated Communist Party of Greece (KKE) General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas on Tuesday.

“Since 2:00 in the morning, the people of Lesvos and Chios have come face to face with the brutality of the riot police. From the port to the villages, thousands of islanders that took the streets are being attacked with chemicals, tear gas and police’s ISVs (Internal Security Vehicles). The forces of repression are currently operating and behaving …like occupation troops,” Koutsoumbas said.

KKE demands that the government immediately withdraw the forces of repression from the islands and acquiesce to the residents’ rightful demands, he added.

He also called on the people to condemn the government’s authoritarianism, noting that it had resorted to “behaving criminally toward the islanders” in order to enforce the EU-Turkey agreement.
