ATHENS – Continuing a long-running saga around claims by three secret whistleblowers that 10 political rivals of the former ruling Radical Left SYRIZA took bribes from the Swiss drug company Novartis, one of them is set to talk to a parliamentary committee.
The panel is looking into whether former alternative justice minister Dimitris Papangelopoulos meddled in the case when the Radical Left SYRIZA was in power, with prosecutors and former prosecutors also swapping charges of political interference.
The committee issued bench warrants for the whistleblowers, whose names are being kept secret, to testify although legally they can’t be compelled. One of them went to the Greek police headquarters, said Kathimerini, and agreed to talk anyway.
Not a shred of evidence has been produced beyond the word of the whistleblowers that they overheard the politicians they named, including former premier and then-New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras, took money from Novartis.
Seven of the 10, including Samaras, have been cleared of what former premier and now major opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said was the biggest scandal since the creation of the modern Greek state, with no evidence yet of any wrongdoing.
