ATHENS – “The prime minister’s decision to propose Mrs. Sakellaropoulou for the position of President of [Hellenic] Republic signals the passage to a new decade, a new era, in a country that is emerging from a 10-year crisis and hoping for a national revival,” stated government spokesperson Stelios Petsas in an interview with ANT1 TV on Thursday.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis proposed senior justice Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou as a candidate for the presidency in an announcement on Wednesday.

“What could be better than a woman to symbolise this national revival. Our proposal to have the first woman President of the Republic is a uniting, progressive and merit-based choice,” said Petsas, expressing hope that other parliamentary parties will see it the same way.

On migration, he underlined that there was no change in government policy and accused main opposition SYRIZA of making the problem worse.

Referring to the decongestion of the islands, he said that 9,000 asylum seekers have been transferred from the islands to mainland Greece while another 11,000 people are to be transferred shortly. He also reiterated that closed-type migrant facilities will be established and the open centres will be shut down.
