LOS ANGELES – The Oscar race is already underway with films campaigning for nominations through advertisements in print, online, and on television. With a five-page ad in Vanity Fair’s Awards Extra special edition, Cliffs of Freedom is hoping to catch the attention of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ voters.
The film tells the story of an ill-fated romance between a young Greek village girl and a conflicted Turkish officer during the dawn of the Greek War for Independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821. Based on Marianne Metropoulos’s novel Daughter of Destiny, the film was produced by Casey Cannon and Metropoulos, and directed by Van Ling from a screenplay by Ling, Metropoulos, and Kevin Bernhardt.
Cliffs of Freedom is campaigning for all the major awards, including Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as the technical awards for production design, costume design, visual effects, and cinematography, among others.
For those interested in how the voting process works, according to the Oscars’ website, “regular awards are presented for outstanding individual or collective film achievements in a wide variety of categories. Most categories are nominated by the members of the corresponding branch–actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. However, certain categories such as International Feature Film and Animated Feature Film have special voting rules which can be viewed at our Rules & Eligibility page. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.
“Nominations voting is conducted using both paper and online ballots, with online voting being the preferred choice for the overwhelming majority of Academy members. Voting for nominations begins in late December, and all votes are tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
“Nomination results are then announced at a live televised press conference in mid-January at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.”
